Important – League Age

ECNLL uses Little League International’s official “League Age”, not your player’s actual birthdate age, to determine eligibility. To find your player’s league age, please use the official Little League Age Chart.

Explanation of Divisions

ECNLL offers a combination of divisions each season based on registration numbers at every level. The league reserves the right to adjust divisions and age ranges as needed.

Below is a general overview of each division. Final placement will be based on evaluations and league needs.

Tee Ball & Minors C (Rookies): 100% Instructional Divisions

  • These divisions are instructional only – no wins, losses, or standings are kept.
  • Coaches and/or teammates may be requested; ECNLL will do its best to accommodate but cannot guarantee requests.
  • Coaches may be on the field on defense to help instruct players.

TEE BALL
League Ages 4–5 (and first-time 6-year-olds)

Tee Ball is the entry level to organized baseball for most children. It is fully instructional and focused on learning in an encouraging, nurturing setting. Players learn:

  • How to hit, run the bases, catch, throw, and work as a team.
  • Every child bats and plays in the field every inning.

Players hit and run to first base only and remain on base even if an out is made. The defense works on making outs. Games are up to 90 minutes and typically no more than three innings, depending on the number of players. First-year league age 5 and 6 players must start in Tee Ball.

MINOR C (Rookies): Coach Pitch / Machine Pitch
League Ages 5–8

Players league age 5-6 must have completed at least one season of Tee Ball. This division is a step up from Tee Ball and introduces more structure and competition.

  • First half of the season: Coach Pitch
  • Second half of the season: Machine Pitch
  • Players receive up to 5 pitches from a coach (or 7 from a machine); if no hit, they may hit off the tee.
  • Three swinging strikes or seven pitches without a hit = an out (batter returns to the dugout).
  • Batters and runners may advance more than one base on hits to the outfield.
  • No advancing on overthrows and no stealing.
  • Catchers are introduced and teams may field a 10th defensive player.

Games are generally about 90 minutes.

Minor B, Minor A & Majors

For Spring Season only (not Fall Ball):

  • All players league age 7 and above must attend tryouts, usually held near the beginning of each calendar year.
  • Players are then drafted onto the division that best matches their age and skill level.
  • Players league age 6 may participate in tryouts for CAPS (Minor B) if they have completed at least one Spring season of Tee Ball.
  • Teams at these levels keep score and standings.

Minor A & Majors: ECNLL holds Tournament of Champions (TOC) at these levels. Division winners advance to District 41’s TOC.

MINOR B (CAPS)
League Ages 6–9 (with some 10-year-olds)

This division bridges instructional and competitive play, with a mix of coach and kid pitch.

  • First half: Coach Pitch
  • Second half: Full Kid Pitch
  • Full batting order is used; only 9 play defense at a time.
  • Players are guaranteed playing time according to Little League rules.
  • All extra-base hits are allowed.
  • Players may steal 2nd and 3rd base after the pitch crosses the plate. They may advance on passed balls or overthrows to 2nd and 3rd, but home plate is “locked” — no advancing home on steals, passed balls, or overthrows on steals.
  • A half-inning ends when 4 runs score or 3 outs are recorded (until the 4th inning).

Games are typically 105–130 minutes.

This division participates in “Little Stars,” a District 41 tournament for league ages 7–8.

MINOR A
League Ages 8–10 (with some 11-year-olds)

Minor A is for players not yet ready for Majors and is fully player-pitch (no coach pitch). The catcher position becomes critical, and strategy and umpiring play bigger roles.

  • Third base is no longer locked.
  • Run limit is 5 runs per half-inning.
  • Games are typically 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours; no new inning starts after 2 hours of play, but also dependent on interleague rules
  • The local board may restrict the division to 9-10 or 8-11 depending on league needs.
  • League age 8 players may be considered for Minor A if they have completed at least two Spring seasons in Minor B (CAPS).

Minor A participates in District 41 TOC and players are eligible for 10U and 11U All Stars.

MAJORS
League Ages 10–12

This is the level of baseball seen on TV during the Little League World Series. It is the most competitive division in the core Little League program.

  • Players league age 10–12 are eligible to be drafted to a Majors team.
  • The local board may restrict the division to 11–12 or 10–12 depending on league needs.
  • Generally, no time limit, 6 innings to be played in full (5 and 1/2 innings if the Home team is leading when the come to bat in theif half inning).
  • League age 10 players may be considered for Majors if they have played at least two Spring seasons in Minor A.
  • Drop third strike is enforced in this division.

Majors participates in District 41 TOC and players are eligible for 11U and 12U All Stars.

Intermediate, Juniors & Seniors

INTERMEDIATE (50/70)
League Ages 11–13

Intermediate plays on a 50/70 field and introduces full baseball rules more similar to high school:

  • Leads and pick-offs are allowed.
  • Faster pace and more advanced strategy.
  • League age 11–12 players can double-roster (both Majors and Intermediate) with approval from the Player Agent, President, Team Manager, and Director of Managers.

JUNIORS / SENIORS
League Ages 13–16

These upper divisions play on a full-size field (60’6" mound, 90' bases) and are similar to high school baseball.

  • Juniors is generally for ages 13–14; Seniors for 14–16 (exact age ranges may vary by league decision).
  • Games are a minimum of 5 innings (within a time limit) or 7 innings and may exceed 2 hours.

Juniors and Seniors participate in All Stars.

Players who are not included in the league-age groups listed above are not eligible for any baseball division in Little League for the current season.
